The committee, which is likely to meet on Wednesday, will conduct a detailed inquiry into the data-sharing practices of these apps, including top social media platforms TikTok, Helo and WeChat. Executives from apps such as TikTok, Bigo Live and Likee said they will cooperate with the government in the investigations and that they had begun the process.
"Talent is everywhere but the opportunity is not. Over and over again, we see that when people have access to education and skilling, they create new economic opportunity for themselves, as well as their communities," said the India-born Nadella in a webcast.
“As part of our regular deepweb and darkweb monitoring, we came across a threat actor who claimed to have around 1.29 million customer records of LimeRoad. The data seems to be legitimate,” said Cyble.
Advertisers expect budgets and campaigns to move to platforms like YouTube and Facebook’s Instagram from the Chinese app, but despite TikTok’s meteoric rise, media agency experts feel the move won’t make a big enough dent.
The 59 apps, most of which have Chinese links, were banned by the government citing that they were prejudicial to sovereignty, integrity and security of the country.
"India's measure selectively and discriminatorily aims at certain Chinese apps on ambiguous and far-fetched grounds, runs against fair and transparent procedure requirements, abuses national security exceptions and (is suspected of) violating WTO rules," Ji Rong, spokesman at the Chinese embassy in New Delhi, said in a statement.
"We support the government's action of blocking 59 Chinese apps and they should be more aggressive and go beyond these 59 apps.
