DuckDuckGo has emerged as the second most used search engine in the world after Google, due to its focus on privacy. The search engine says it doesn't collect any personal information on those who use it. It also doesn't throw up the IP address of the user.
Nilekani, the former chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), was speaking at an event on the fifth anniversary of Digital India. “We have completed one part of the journey, but we have to continue applying technology to governance,” he said.
The platform, owned by China-based ByteDance, was one of 59 Chinese mobile applications that the government banned on Monday, accusing them of causing a threat to national security by stealing and transferring the data of Indian users to locations outside the country.
The government on Monday banned 59 Chinese apps, including the most popular TikTok, citing national security concerns. The move has, however, hit hundreds of content creators on the ByteDance-owned app, some of whom used to earn a few lakh rupees promoting branded content.
These trackers attributed this to the rising anti-China sentiments and supply constraints these brands faced from Indian plants and multiple consignments of imported finished products and components stuck at customs since last week. Chinese brands including Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Realme and OnePlus as of January to March quarter together controlled over 80% market share in India as per the trackers.
Gmail has a large user base in India and has been promoting its Google Suite of products aggressively amongst an expanding user base. It is not clear whether the issue only pertains to Indian users.
